Looking for the perfect dog-friendly neighborhoods to visit near Encinitas, California? Look no further! As a professional pet sitter and dog walker, I know the importance of finding a welcoming community for both pets and their owners. In Encinitas, there are several neighborhoods that fit the bill, each with their unique offerings.
Cardiff-by-the-Sea
One of the most beautiful neighborhoods in the area, Cardiff-by-the-Sea offers stunning ocean views and a popular surfing spot. It also boasts a quaint downtown area that is perfect for leisurely strolls with your furry friend. And Seaside Beach in Cardiff is dog friendly (on-leash). If you’re in need of veterinary care, Cardiff Animal Hospital is a reliable option. For pet shops, Earthwise Pet is the new kid on the block, a high-end shop at Cardiff Town Square. They also offer do-it-yourself dog wash tubs to get those sandy paws clean. For those looking for a meal with their pet by their side, nearby Cardiff Seaside Market offers pet-friendly outdoor seating, as do a number of restaurants, such as Best Pizza and Brew, Pipes Cafe, Cicciotti’s, Ki’s Restaurant, Tower 13 and more!. New to town is Cardiff Farmer’s Market, open each Saturday 10-2 at Mira Costa College parking lot.
Leucadia
Another great dog-friendly neighborhood in Encinitas is Leucadia. This northerly laid-back neighborhood offers an eclectic mix of shops and restaurants, as well as easy access to beaches. For pet health concerns, Coastal Animal Hospital is a great option, while Priority Public House offers pet-friendly outdoor seating. Other pet-friendly cafes and restaurants are: Pannikin Coffee, Le Papagallo, Vigilluci’s, French Corner Cafe, Lofty Coffee and more. The Leucadia Farmers Market is another must-visit spot for pet owners, with vendors, live music and outdoor seating. It opens each Sunday 10-2. Every dog should visit Olympus Park, which boasts 2 separate fenced dog runs, one for small and one for larger dogs.
Olivenhain
For a more rural setting, Olivenhain is an excellent option, especially for horse lovers. This neighborhood was first settled by Germans. It was named after the many groves of Olive trees. It has been highly preserved and developed slowly, and now offers large lots (most around 3 acres!) and equestrian trails, making it perfect for dog owners who love to hike in the mountains. Although there are no pet-specific businesses in Olivenhain, this neighborhood is a great place for pet owners who want a peaceful setting to explore many trails with their furry friends. Be mindful of horses on trails, they have the right of way. Temperatures in this part of town are typically 10 degrees or more higher than the rest of Encinitas (thank you micro-climate!), so be sure to bring water on your hikes.
Encinitas Highlands
Encinitas Highlands is a historic neighborhood that offers ocean views and is within walking distance to downtown Encinitas. For pet owners who love to hike on pet-friendly trails, San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve is a must-visit spot, as is the local favorite, Encinitas Ranch Trails. Starbucks in Encinitas Highlands also offers pet-friendly outdoor seating for those looking for a place to eat or sip on a cool drink with their dog. There are also countless restaurants along the Pacific Coast Hwy 101 which have outdoor seating for dog patrons.
New Encinitas
Lastly, New Encinitas is a family-friendly community that offers good schools, parks, and playgrounds. Encinitas Community Park/Maggie Houlihan Park is a must-visit spot for pet owners, as it offers 2 off-leash dog areas, one for small and one for large dogs, making it a great spot for pet owners who want a place to exercise their furry friend. Plant Power is right next door for vegans to nosh outside with their furry friends (They also boast a drive-through). Scripps Hospital is located across the street, and is the major hub for healthcare and emergency Doctor visits for the 2-legged. A great mom and pop pet shop, Pupologie, is located in the Trader Joe’s shopping center for all your pet supply needs. And just further east is Power Lines Park, a large fenced open space where well behaved dogs can run free. Just beware the foxtails in the summer (see my blog about Foxtails here).
Overall, Encinitas offers several dog-friendly neighborhoods and businesses that are perfect for pet owners. Whether you’re looking for a bustling downtown area, rural setting, or access to the beach, there’s a neighborhood for every type of dog owner. As a professional pet sitter and dog walker, I highly recommend these neighborhoods for any retired people who love to travel with their furry friends.
